Yleisesti tiedostetaan motivaation merkitys kielenoppimisessa. Motivaatio onkin yksi tutkituimmista alueista vieraiden kielten oppimisessa ja opettamisessa. Motivaation rakenne ja syyt vaihtelevat suuresti riippuen kontekstista; eri paikoissa eri aikoina suoritetut tutkimukset antavat hyvin erilaisia tuloksia.
